On the snowy mountain at an altitude of more than 5,000 meters, a patrol team moves slowly. This is Li Dahai, the squadron leader of a squadron of Naqu detachment of the Armed Police Tibet Corps, leading the soldiers to inspect the base station of the Qinghai-Tibet railway line set up at the top of the mountain.
Although it is surrounded by white snow, the temperature has already fallen below freezing point, but the officers and men simply can’t wear coats, and every step up, they will ooze hot sweat.
Tanggula Tibetan means "a mountain on the plateau" and Mongolian means "a place where even eagles can hardly fly". Li Dahai’s squadron is stationed in the no-man’s land of Tanggula Mountain at an altitude of 5061 meters. The annual minimum temperature is MINUS 42℃, and the gale of magnitude 8 or above lasts for more than 160 days. It is called "the forbidden zone of life".
It is in such a harsh environment that the squadron undertakes the patrol task of the 138-kilometer section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway in no man’s land all the year round. On the way, there are hundreds of bridges, culverts and base stations that need to be inspected on foot. They patrol back and forth along the bumpy dirt road every day.
Due to the task, they spent many cold winter nights in the car, and patrolled in the sudden rainstorm for countless times until they were soaked to the skin. Vehicle failures were commonplace. At most, they had a flat tire seven times during the patrol.
Since the formation of the squadron, 320 vehicle tires have been damaged and 6 off-road vehicles have been scrapped. The total patrol distance is over 1.05 million kilometers, which is equivalent to 26 laps around the earth. The officers and men have ensured the safety and smoothness of the "Heavenly Road" with their youth and persistence.
