The Ford Mondeo in History
International online car channel news: As a joint venture brand mid-sized car familiar to domestic car users, Ford Mondeo has quietly gone through nearly 20 years and 4 model changes in China. The new fifth-generation Changan Ford Mondeo was also officially announced on March 18, 2022. The pre-sale price is 15.98-21 9,800 yuan, and it will be officially listed at the 2022 Beijing Auto Show. After the discontinuation of Ford Fusion in 2020, that is, the US Mondeo, the European Mondeo also officially ended in March 2021. After nearly 30 years, the medium and large sedan released in 1993 still failed to meet the market trend and stepped down. Although the Mondeo in the European and American markets has been discontinued, the Chinese market is still continuing to sell.
A 1970s Ford Cortina — the Mondeo.
The earliest history of the Mondeo car series can be traced back to the black and white film era. In the 1970s, Ford released a mid-to-large family car called the Cortina. At that time, children would be proud of their father’s Cortina. After 20 years and 2.50 million cars were produced, the Cortina was discontinued in 1982.

Cortina’s successor – Sierra
After Cortina was discontinued, Ford also wanted to create a mid-sized family car with a million sales volume to replace Cortina, so Sierra appeared, but this car did not continue the glory of Cortina. Its shape was not aesthetically pleasing at the time. The front of the car was plastic, and the body design made it produce higher rear lift at not too high speeds. When encountering cross winds or overtaking cars, the body shook significantly, which made Sierra extremely difficult to control.
Ford Sierra Sedan
In 1986, a Sierra suddenly lost control while driving and rolled all the way down the towering road. The roof on the driver’s side was hit and severely dented. The driver of the car was Sir Frank Williams, the founder of the Williams team. Although the accident did not endanger his life, the rented Sierra ultimately took away his ability to walk. No way, Ford had to figure out a way to make people fall in love with the Sierra as much as they fell in love with the Cortina, so Ford still used the old way to make the car faster.
Ford Sierra RS Cosworth
Then the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth hit the ground running. That rickety car became a 240km/h car, as no Ford had done before. The Sierra survived its service life, but just as the Sierra replaced the Cortina, it was time for a replacement. Later, the car that replaced the Sierra was the current Mondeo.
The Mondeo was born — a four-door sedan with a global positioning.
As a successor to the Ford Sierra, Mondeo soon became popular in the European market after its release in 1993, with cumulative sales reaching 5 million units. However, with the rise of SUVs and crossover trends, sales of traditional medium and large cars and derivative models were greatly affected, resulting in Mondeo leaving the European market after withdrawing from the US market.
The original Mondeo – built on the concept of "global car"
The second generation of Mondeo, the earliest domestic version introduced in China, is based on the European version
Since 2000, Mondeo’s performance in Europe has been on the decline, with sales at least 80% lower than at its peak. The shutdown of the European Mondeo can be regarded as an indicator of the changing market environment. The shutdown of once-popular products means that other models in the same class are likely to follow suit.
A second spring in China
The third-generation model is well known to Chinese users with Mondeo Zhisheng
As for the Chinese version of Mondeo, the overall performance is relatively stable. Although SUVs are gradually being taken seriously, sedans are still very popular, so there will be no shutdown crisis in the short term. Even if key regions such as Europe and the United States have stopped production, China should be able to provide enough research and development resources to maintain the Mondeo car series for a period of time under the premise of sufficient sales.
The fifth generation of the new Mondeo that implements the concept of "from China to the world"
Mondeo has undergone a transformation from the world to China, and then to China to the world, allowing global car users to see the importance of Chinese car consumer preferences. The many changes in the new Mondeo also represent the further rejuvenation of domestic consumers. The characteristics of both new forces and the attributes of fuel vehicles have undoubtedly further expanded its target group. (Ford Mondeo, photo)
